The wolf pit in Slättemossa

The wolf pit in Slättemossa was probably built around the year 1700, more than 300 years ago. The stone-walled wolf pit is 2.4 meters deep and over 4 meters in diameter. From the Middle Ages until the middle of the 19th century, there were many wolves throughout Sweden. Farmers and ranchers had big problems with wolves killing their livestock. The wolf pit is interesting because it tells us about how people tried to protect themselves from predators in the past. When the wolf was caught in the pit, it was killed with a spear or gun. Hunting with wolf pits was prohibited in 1864.
