Björneström (eng)
In Björneström there is a six meter high waterfall that has powered mills here for at least 600 years. Here several furniture factories, a mill and many different older buildings are located by the two dams. Most of the houses are from the period 1900–1940. Björneström is an important historical representative of ”Virserum’s furniture empire”, one of the country’s more distinct industrial regions during the early 20th century. The residential buildings are built with a lot of decorative woodwork. It is evident that the local carpenters, who built the houses, were highly skilled in crafts and had a desire for beautiful details. Since 1948 the sculpture Näcken, by community based artist Theodor Carlsson, has been placed in the pond below.
