The largest peasant uprising in the Nordics in 1542–43 was led by Nils Dacke. The people of Småland protested against King Gustav Vasa’s new harsh taxes and centralization of power and control. During the Dackefejden, Dacke moved with his followers through the large area of Småland and into Östergötland. The story ends with Dacke being captured and killed by the king’s mercenaries, in August 1543 in ”Rödeby forest” in northern Blekinge. His head was put on a stake outside gates of the city of Kalmar to show what happens if you start a rebellion against the king.
