The battle of Virserum
”Suddenly, as if raised from the ground, hundreds of Dackes soldiers stood in the middle of the king’s men and tried to take their sledges”
The decisive battle between Dacke’s and the king’s men took place ”in a stocky forest next to a lake” in the week of Easter in 1543. According to legend, it happened right here on the is of lake Hjorten. An iron battle ax found and donated to the county museum in 1932 may support the theory, as well as finds of several cannonballs and bones that could be from buried soldiers on Skallön.
